The darkest 2Pac
If you ask 2Pac fans which of his tracks captures him at his most relentless, Hellrazor always comes up. Released posthumously on R U Still Down? (Remember Me), it's one of those tracks where you can hear everything: the anger, the prophecy, the weight he was carrying. This isn't pop 2Pac. This is the 2Pac you don't play in front of your mom.
Reimagining Hellrazor through deep house meant respecting that energy. I wasn't going to soften it. I wasn't going to make it pretty. I wanted the bass to carry the same weight that the original lyrics carry — heavy, dark, no compromise.
The production
Built around a slow deep house groove with atmospheric pads sitting low in the mix, this version of Hellrazor strips back the original's percussion and replaces it with something more spatial. Bones' underground darkness from the modern Tennessee scene fits naturally here — his voice operates in the same emotional space as 2Pac's. Two generations of dark hip-hop, one continuous mood.
The drop sits later than usual on this one — I wanted the listener to feel the build, the weight, before the deep house architecture takes over. When it hits, it's earned.
"Some tracks ask for joy. This one asks for silence."
Why Hellrazor now
Most of my 2Pac deep house remixes lean into the night drive — the highway, the city lights, the open road. Hellrazor breaks that pattern. This isn't a track for the drive. It's a track for staying still, headphones on, lights off, listening to something that doesn't apologize for being heavy.
It's also the track in this series where I let Murat Koff sit closest to the front. The original Hellrazor was raw — my job was to give it a new room to live in, not redecorate it.
Best listened to:
- At night, headphones on, no distractions
- Through subwoofers — the low end matters here
- Loud, but not for the dance floor
- When you want to feel the weight, not escape it
